Where to exchange dollars in Medellín: a practical guide

The short answer: if you are carrying cash dollars, the simplest option is a professional money changer. You walk in with your passport, agree on a rate and leave with pesos, with no Colombian bank account needed. If you have no cash, an ATM works too, but check the fees first. Here is how the options compare, and how to tell whether a rate is actually good.

Your options in Medellín

  • Professional money changers: The usual choice for cash. You will find them mainly in shopping malls and in busy areas like downtown, El Poblado and Laureles. They exchange on the spot, and many will confirm the rate before you go.
  • ATMs: Convenient if you have a debit card and no cash. Travelers in 2026 report fees of roughly COP 15,000 to 30,000 per withdrawal and limits of about COP 600,000 to 900,000 at common banks, and your own bank may charge on top. These numbers change, so read the screen before you confirm. If the ATM offers to convert the amount for you, decline it: that conversion can be expensive.
  • Banks: A solid option for very large or documented transactions, but less practical for a quick exchange as a visitor. Not every branch exchanges cash for walk-in customers, so ask first.
  • The airport: Handy if you need pesos for the ride into town, but airport counters tend to charge for that convenience. A common approach is to exchange only what you need there and the rest in the city.

How to compare exchange rates

The rate you see online is only useful if you know what you will actually receive. Before you hand over any money, ask one question: "How many pesos will I get in total for this amount?" That number already includes everything, so it lets you compare any two places fairly.

  • Look at the right rate: When you sell dollars, the "buy" rate is the one that applies to you. The money changer is buying them from you.
  • Remember that "no commission" is only part of the picture: Money changers earn from the difference between buying and selling, so compare the total in pesos as well.
  • Confirm before you go: Rates change during the day with the market. A quick WhatsApp message can save you a trip.

What to bring

  • Your original passport: If you are visiting Colombia, it is all the ID you need. By law, the money changer must see the original document.
  • Bills in good condition: Torn or heavily marked bills can be refused, so keep your cash flat and clean while you travel.
  • A little extra time for larger amounts: From USD 1,000, we take a copy of your ID. From USD 10,000, Colombian rules call for enhanced due diligence, which includes the origin and destination of the funds. Cash payments for the currency we buy go up to USD 9,999.

Staying safe with your cash

  • Never exchange money on the street: A better-looking rate is not worth the risk of fake bills or a short count.
  • Use an established location: Look for a formal business in a mall or building, ideally with security cameras and a private space.
  • Count your money before you leave: Do it at the counter, then put it away before you walk out.
  • Carry only what you need: Exchange in smaller amounts rather than walking around with all your cash at once.
